Relay For Feliciaa

When I first decided to try and use Second Life to raise money for my local RL Relay For Life team back in 2004, it was easy to raise some money, have a good time and not take everything too seriously. But over the years, I’ve had an opportunity to get to know a lot of people in SL whose lives have been forever altered by cancer. People are dying! It’s a very depressing thought, yes, but we’re not going to get any closer to the cure by sugar-coating the truth. We’ve got a serious problem on our hands.

But the good news is that we don’t have to sit here feeling helpless. We can do something about it, and we can do something now. We can Relay.

When Vengerax told me he wanted to change the name of his Relay team after I’d already registered the name, I was reluctant to deal with the inconvenience. After I learned that he wanted to change the team’s name to Transylvania Relay For Feliciaa, I immediately regretted my initial reaction. I’m SO glad that these guys have decided to Relay in honor of my great friend and long time Second Life resident Feliciaa Feaver.

I had an opportunity to visit her for the first time last year, when I drove to Kansas City to bring her flowers from all her friends and family in Second Life who put together some money on a moment’s notice to show her we love her. She could not stop talking about her Second Life family the entire time I was there, and despite the fact that she would be undergoing radiation therapy, she was DETERMINED to fly to San Francisco for SLCC, where I got to see her smiling face a second time.

As many by now know, Fel isn’t doing so well, and there’s a chance she may not be here to walk that first lap with us this year at the Second Life Relay For Life. It breaks my heart to think of it, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to lie down and do nothing.

Fel, if you’re reading this, I’m dedicating my Relay effort to you, and I’ll raise US$200,000, or else I’ll shave my avatar’s head AND my own head. And if you’re not there to walk that first lap with us, we’ll walk the second one for you.
